The short answer
For Bandcamp ad campaigns, use a smartlink bridge page when you need ad tracking. Track the click-out from your page to Bandcamp as the conversion event, then read sales inside Bandcamp or analytics. Do not treat the click-out as a purchase, and do not optimize from a number Bandcamp does not send back to the ad account.
Key takeaways
  • A direct Bandcamp link can reduce friction, but it gives the ad account less usable conversion signal.
  • A smartlink bridge lets you fire the browser Pixel and CAPI before the listener leaves for Bandcamp.
  • The default conversion remains the tracked click-out, not a Bandcamp sale.
  • Use Bandcamp reporting and analytics to judge revenue after the click-out.

Use a bridge page when tracking matters

A smartlink bridge page gives you one controlled step between the ad and Bandcamp. The visitor lands on your page, sees the release or merch offer, clicks through to Bandcamp, and that click-out becomes the conversion event.

That event is still one step before the sale, but it is a much cleaner signal than a raw ad click. It tells the account who was interested enough to leave your page for the store.

  • Ad click to smartlink.
  • Smartlink click-out to Bandcamp.
  • Bandcamp sale or no sale inside Bandcamp.

Send the same event from browser and server

The browser Pixel can fire when the click-out happens. CAPI can send the same event from the server. When both events share the same event name and event ID, Meta can dedupe the pair and count one conversion.

That matters more on mobile, where iOS privacy controls, ad blockers, and in-app browsers can make browser-only tracking unreliable. The server event gives the campaign a better chance of keeping the signal.

Note
The tracked event should be the Bandcamp click-out. Sales still need to be checked in Bandcamp.

Use UTMs for the after-report

UTM tags do not send conversions to the ad platform. They label the traffic so analytics can tell you which campaign, ad, or creative sent the visitor.

For a Bandcamp campaign, I would tag the smartlink URL used in the ad, keep the campaign dates clean, and then compare three separate reports: ad-platform results, smartlink click-outs, and Bandcamp sales.

  • Use utm_source for the traffic source.
  • Use utm_medium for the channel type.
  • Use utm_campaign for the release or merch push.
  • Use utm_content for the creative version.

When a direct Bandcamp link is fine

Sometimes the lower-friction path matters more than ad optimization. If you are posting organically to an audience that already knows you, a direct Bandcamp link can be the better move.

For cold paid traffic, I would usually want the bridge page. You are buying data as much as traffic, and the click-out event gives you a number you can grade before you raise spend.

The setup I would use

Build a Bandcamp-facing smartlink, put the Bandcamp button first, and make the page match the promise in the ad. Fire the conversion only on the Bandcamp click-out, not on the page view.

Then read the campaign in order. If the account shows cheap results but Bandcamp sales do not move, the click-out is not the problem by itself. The offer, price, audience, and music still have to do the selling after the handoff.

  • One clear Bandcamp button above the fold.
  • Pixel plus CAPI on the click-out event.
  • Shared event ID for dedup.
  • UTMs on the ad URL for later reporting.

Check the conversion number

Once the campaign is optimizing for the smartlink click-out, grade the result against a realistic cost-per-conversion range before you scale.

Frequently asked

Can I put the Meta Pixel directly on Bandcamp?

Bandcamp's current help center says it does not support Facebook tracking pixels. If that changes, verify it in Bandcamp's own docs before changing your campaign setup.

What should the conversion be for a Bandcamp ad?

Use the tracked click-out from your smartlink to Bandcamp. It is the closest event you control before the listener reaches Bandcamp, but it is not a purchase.

Can the ad account optimize for Bandcamp sales?

Only if the ad account receives a sale event. In the usual smartlink setup, it receives the click-out event, while the actual purchase is checked inside Bandcamp or analytics.

Should I use UTMs on Bandcamp campaigns?

Yes, but for traffic labeling, not conversion delivery. UTMs help analytics group traffic by source, medium, campaign, and creative.
